Wild watermelon! I was pretty excited about seeing this. It was right off the road and I should have seen it before. I went and got a camera. The fruit looks exactly like a small watermelon, but the leaves are different. I also saw older dried-out melons from last year, too. There were at least 4 plants and a dozen melons and covered about 40 to 50 sq ft. When I left I noticed I smelled an onion odor, though the dried out melon did not have an odor. I assumed I needed to change my shirt. I've seen this once before growing in a dirt yard off 183 and CR 170.

I finally found out when I got home and did some resarch that the common name for this is "stink gourd" and now I know why. Kind of a disappointment, but still a surprising find.
