I've seen this bird in flight several times, but could not identify it. It looks almost like a female cardinal in flight because the reddish rust wings are  pretty striking. They almost seem translucent when the sun shines through them. Today I saw two together so I knew it could not be a cardinal since the male would be much redder. I took som pics and identified it was a Yellow-billed Cuckoo. Monte mentioned he saw one of these that crashed into his window and was stunned, but I did not otherwise know they were seen around here. Mystery solved! Notice the black bands on the tail - you will only see these in a picture unless you get very close, but it aids the identification. Click on the link and go to the Sounds tab and play it - you might have heard these but never seen one before. They summer all over Texas and the eastern half of the US.

Later I got a pretty good picture of a Painted Bunting.
